ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

The Los Angeles based United States Veterans’ Artists Alliance (USVAA) was founded in 2004 as a multi-disciplinary, non-profit arts organization. From our inception our mission has been to provide veterans of all eras and all branches of the military with opportunities in the arts. It has been our experience that providing veterans both a foundation for their work and freedom to pursue it as they see fit, is the best means to bringing quality work forward while maintaining the organization for the long-term -- so that we are able to consistently assist veterans and artists.

Our very first event was an improv show produced and emceed by Air Force Veteran Dave Carter and his ground-breaking improv group, Nation of Improv. That event was so successful we continue to hold it once a month believing as we do that improv, comedy and satire are one of the pillars of the arts.  In 2006, we initiated and hosted DEBRIEFING -- a photography exhibit produced by and about veterans from the Viet Nam War, brought to us by Army veteran Lynn Pedigo. We followed that with CUSTER, a memory play about George Armstrong Custer, which addressed the abuse of power by military figures.

In 2008, our biggest year to date, we took DEBRIEFING to the National Vietnam Veterans Art Museum in Chicago, sponsored a special performance of THE NEED TO KNOW, a one-person coming-of-age-play by Air Force Veteran April Fitzsimmons, and brought our Summer Shakespeare Festival, co-produced with the Veterans Center for the Performing Arts (VCPA) to the West Los Angeles Civic Center Band Shell for a 9 week run in July and August. In 2009 USVAA produced THE ZOO STORY (with Christopher Sweeney, Dion Jackson, directed by Max Hartman) in conjunction with DISARMED, a gallery exhibit of Christopher Sweeney’s paintings.

This year we will continue our Summer Shakespeare Festival by bringing A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM and HENRY V to the stage, both directed by Stephan Wolfert (VCPA).  In addition to providing opportunities in the arts to veterans, USVAA assists veterans with a range of social services, including help navigating various agencies providing benefits, job searches and education guidance.  Finally, USVAA advocates on behalf of veterans, veterans in the arts and for promoting art as a necessary component of life.  We strongly believe in civic engagement with our communities with the understanding that together we can enhance the world around us.
